Charity of the Year

  • The London Book Fair's 2018 Charity of the Year

We are delighted to have The Kittiwake Trust as our Charity of the Year for 2018—a charity on a mission to provide free books to those who most need them.

The Kittiwake Trust runs two projects: Borderline Books and the Kittiwake Trust Multilingual Library in Newcastle, England, which opened in 2015. Both initiatives aim to promote, and aid literacy, in marginalised groups.

The Kittiwake Trust Multilingual Library benefits from the wide diversity of students and others living in Newcastle who are able to catalogue the books in all 81 languages while having a chance to work on their English at the same time.

The Trust's second programme, Borderline Books, donates books to police custody suites, prisons, individual prisoners, probation and groups supporting ex-prisoners.

    Charity of the Year

The London Book Fair has supported many and varied book-related charities as long as the Fair has been running. The support has taken many forms, from free-of-charge stands to promotion on the website and everything in between.

In 2014, we formalised these initiatives somewhat, and invited applications to become the annual priority charity. The Charity of the Year for 2017 was Worldreader, 2016 was First Story, and 2015 was Book Trust.
